The loss of a life is never a happy affair. Even in the glory of battle there will always be those that mourn the fallen. We glorify and romanticise death in many ways and forms. Such raw emotion has led to the creation of some of the greatest music, artwork and stories ever created. Today we take a path down a more sinister and tragic road. The event took place on the 19th of February 1994 in Riverside California. My friend Leo who told me this tale, was not even a twinkle in his fathers eye and yet the story still is very much alive in their local area. Unlike a lot of tales covered on this blog, there are no supernatural elements here, just unexplained tragedy and science. Gloria Ramirez lived in Riverside California and was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She died at 31 shortly after arriving in the hospital due to complications with her disease. The medical staff that had encountered her body and blood very swiftly became unwell, five critically so. Fainting, shortness of breath and muscle spasms affected many and the critically unwell took two weeks to recover.

Dubbed the Toxic Lady, the cause of this phenomenon is still uncertain. Initially it was believed that it was caused by mass hysteria, however one victim developed hepatitis and avascular necrosis in her knees. This opened up further investigation. Scientists found traces of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) within Ramirez's body. The substance can be found bought in hardware stores in a gel form. It is mostly used by the general public as a safer paint stripper and degreaser, but has many more advanced modern uses in stripping circuitry and in in vivo studies when testing compounds. Ramirez had been self administering it as a home remedy for pain relief, which could have explained her bodies greasy appearance. The most believed theory is that this that the dimethyl sulfoxide in her body converted into dimethyl sulphate, an extremely poisonous and highly carcinogenic alkylating agent. Even though this was the theory that was officially published, it is still up for debate. No one will ever know for certain what happened on February 19th 1994, but the incident will continue to live on in the surrounding community for many generations to come.
Here is a TV News Report from Casper News as the events unfolded.
